UN Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill ambassador Misako Konno arrived in Tanzania yesterday for a five-day visit that is aimed at promoting UNDP work in the country. According to a press release issued by UNDP, Ms Konno and her delegation will visit a number of projects which are financed by UNDP and implemented by the Government of Tanzania as well as projects supported by Japan.
During her visit she will strive to raise awareness on initiatives supported by UNDP countrywide. The initiatives seek to help the nation achieve some of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Ms Konno is also expected to visit a solar scheme in Mwanza that includes a school and a health centre which use solar panels.
In Dar es Salaam, the Ambassador will visit Temeke Hospital where she will review the services provided to HIV/AIDS patients such as voluntary counselling and testing (VCT). She will also visit an orphanage centre and the Dar es Salaam Fish Market. Both projects have been financed by the government of Japan.
Ms Konno is also expected to hold discussions with senior government officials. Ms Konno is one of five UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors representing every region round the globe. She is the longest serving ambassador. She was appointed as UNDP Global Goodwill Ambassador in October 1998.
