Zanzibar Judo Association (ZJA) yesterday received sports gear worth 113,600 US dollars (about 150m/-) from three different Japanese organizations, in a bid to develop the spot in the isles.
ZJA Secretary General, Saleh Mohamed, said the support would go a long way to assist the promotion and development of the sport, which is slightly gaining momentum in Zanzibar. “We requested the organizations last year to extend their support to us in our endeavor to strengthen the sport. We thank them for their positive response,” Mohamed said.
Shimaoka named the organization that made the contribution as Juntendo University Chiba, who contributed 112 pieces of Judo mats worth 33, 600 US dollars (about 45m/-). Others are All Japan Judo Federation who contributed 300 pairs of Judo clothes worth 75,000 US dollars (about 100m/-) and ZJA President Tsuyoshi Shimaoka who contributed 5,000 US dollars (about 6m/-).
The handing over ceremony was held at the Zanzibar Budokan in Amani. The event was graced by the Assistant Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Culture and Sports, Said Shabaan and the General Secretary of the National Sports Council, Khamis Ali Mzee. Meanwhile, ZJA will organize the third East Africa Judo Championship from March 22 to23 at Salaam Hall in Bwawani Hotel. “We have already sent invitations to all East African countries,” said Mohamed.
