Two people are being held by police following a stampede in a Discotheque that claimed 19 lives in Tabora region, some 750 kms north-west of Dar es Salaam yesterday.
The Tabora regional police commander, Mr. Daudi Siasi, told the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) that the two men who are being held are operators of the discotheque.
Mr Saisi said 11 of the victims were boys and that an investigation has been launched to determine the actual cause of the stampede.
TBC also reported that regional authorities have slapped a ban on all disco activities until further notice.
President Jakaya Kikwete has sent a condolence to families of the victims, reportedly to have been aged between 12 and 17 years.
"According to preliminary investigations, the 19 died of stampede and suffocation in the disco hall", RPC Siasi said.
He said the incident occured at a building owned by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) during Eid al-Fitr festivities that mark the end of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadhan.
The Tabora Police chief said that the stampede was caused by a commotion in the disco after the air-conditioning system in the building malfunctioned.
He said several people were being treated for injuries in the regional hospital, following the disco tragedy said to be the biggest in Tanzania's history..
That is a sad situation I really dont understand how a club can be over crowded like that and I wonder how long those kids were in the club to get suffocated. There should be more exits and a limited amount of people in a club I know where I come from you have to be 18 and you there is a limit for the number of people and I dont like the way they have the bodies of those boys laid out on IPPMEDIA.com
