Dar es salaam residents are experiencing acute shortage of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) used as fuel for domestic cooking, heating, catering and other purposes. A survey by 'Daily News' reveals that the city had been facing the shortage for more than a week, where sales personnel at various retail outlets blame the port for the scarcity.
Dozens of petrol stations and other stockists in Dar es Salaam said the scarcity of the product might continue for several days. "I am not sure when the gas will be available. Try to check with us after a few days," Mr Julius Paul, a salesman at a petrol station along Morogoro Road, said.
A salesman at the Kijitonyama OilCom Petrol Station said yesterday that they had just exhausted the stocks and awaiting for replenishment. A city resident said yesterday that he had been looking for LPG for most of the last week. "I went to every petrol station that I know. I ended up exchanging my 16kg cylinder with a smaller one. I was told that it was the only one remaining," Mr Revocatus Kadoshi said.
However, one of the main suppliers of LPG, the Oryx Oil Company Limited, declined to acknowledge the shortage saying that the product was still available at some of their stockists. "I can call one of our distributors right now and he will have gas," said the Oryx Gas Manager, Mr Michael Shimiyu. He, however, failed to give reasons for the absence of the product in retail outlets. The Oryx managing director was not available for comment.
