THE government cannot issue permits for sale of property owned by cooperative societies.
Members themselves are required to plan and decide on such sales at their general meetings, Deputy Agriculture, Food Security and Co-operatives Minister David Mathayo told the National Assembly here yesterday.
Mr Mathayo said the government has always urged proper care of coops' properties to enable members and the people in general to benefit from them.
Answering a question from Ms Esther Nyawazwa (Special Seats-CCM), the deputy minister said the Igunga Cotton Company, has started renovation of the stores at the Nyambiti Cotton Ginnery at Mwabilanda Village whose roofs had collapsed to enable them handle the current season's harvest.
The work also included purchase of spare parts and cotton ginning equipment.
Ms Nyawazwa had noted that the stores have been abandoned after their roofs had collapsed.
She enquired on the possibility of the government letting the people in the area to buy the corrugated iron roof ripped off from the buildings.
She further expressed concern that the co-operative union did not monitor the condition of its properties.
