The Sixth Africa Development Forum opened here yesterday, with leaders being told that gender parity was still a problem in many African countries. Taking place in the shadow of Barack Obama's historical election to be the 44th president of USA, the mantra of the conference being held at the UN-Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) headquarters is "yes we can" overcome gender inequality.
"The priority of the session is to identify key actions, mechanisms for scaling-up and links to overall development strategies, including defined roles of all stakeholders", an official has said. Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children Ms Margareth Sitta, who is representing Tanzania together with Deputy Finance Minister, Mr Yusuf Omar Mzee, said that the session was reviewing the major gaps and obstacles facing countries in their efforts to eliminate harmful practices against women.
She said key achievements and best practices in this respect at community, national, sub-regional and regional levels were also being reviewed. The conference is expected to yield action-oriented strategies ahead of the Beijing Plus 15 in 2010. Over 400 delegates representing a diverse group of politicians, civil societies, academicians, experts and traditional leaders are attending the conference that coincides with the 50th anniversary of UNECA. It takes place few months after the signing in August this year of the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development that sets 28 targets for achieving gender equality by 2015
