The African Medical and Research Foundation (Amref) has planned a multi-billion three-year Community-Based Water, Hygiene and Sanitation project in Serengeti District, Mara Region, designed to benefit 20,472 people in five wards.
The 2.5bn/- project to be officially launched at Isenye today by Mara Regional Commissioner Issa Machibya, will be undertaken with funding from Ferrovial Construction Company of Spain.
Briefing journalists yesterday about Amref's second largest water and sanitation project, after that of Mkuranga in Coast Region, the Foundation’s Country Co-ordinator, Ms Banche Pitt, mentioned the wards that would benefit directly from the project as Isenye, Ring'wani, Kyambahi, Kebanchebancha and Natta.
"The project will contribute to Tanzania’s overall objective of halving the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and adequate basic sanitation services by 2015,” she said.
According to her, the project's objective, which is also intended to benefit 51,703 people indirectly, is to improve the health and quality of life of the selected communities by increasing access and sustainable usage of safe water and basic sanitation services. "The people of Serengeti will be involved fully in the implementation of this project through participatory planning, monitoring and evaluation of project activities," she added.
